Confessions of an Email Addict

Do you check email first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and up to fifty, one hundred or even two hundred or more times during the day?

Do you feel driven - as though you might miss something important if you don’t check!

You might just be addicted to email.

Email is the ultimate modern business time-waster. Ineffectively used, it robs us of our effectiveness, our productivity and our capacity to discern and control how we spend our valuable time.

If you want to get your life and your inbox back under control, try kicking the habit by going cold turkey and checking your emails only twice a day at particular times.

If this is too much of a stretch for you, try using an email “patch” – Cut back to four specific times each day and work backwards from there.

If your contact network is used to all-hours email access to you, let them know about your new plans.  Send them a courtesy email advising how your new productivity measures will work and acknowledging their understanding. Supply alternative contact arrangements for emergencies.

About.com is conducting a survey where they have asked 379 respondents whether they know someone who could be described as “addicted” to email.  92% answered Yes.
